Gravenhurst arena to be named after Graeme Murray

Many Gravenhurst residents came out to the Opera House today to wish hometown hero Graeme Murray all the best before he heads to compete at the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. Murray, a defenceman with Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team, leaves February 27th and the teams first game is March 8th. At today’s event hosted by the Gas Up Graeme Committee and the Town, Deputy Mayor Jeff Watson announced that the Centennial Centre arena will be named the Graeme Murray Arena, likely in the Spring. “We salute you Graeme,” said Watson on behalf of the whole community, “You get to host another party.” Murray also spoke at the event in front of the throngs of well wishers and family members. “I’m really looking forward to this,” he’s said, regarding Sochi and the continuing community support, “thank you for giving me what I need to play best.” So far the Gas Up Graeme Committee has raised over $6,000 to help Murray with expenses. The day also saw autographs being signed by the star and street hockey played between Murray and local kids.
