ORNGE helicopter had to make emergency landing in Muskoka after cockpit window popped out

An ORNGE helicopter had to make an emergency landing at Muskoka Airport after one of its cockpit windows popped out in mid flight. The Toronto Star reports that the chopper was en route to the Haliburton area when it happened Thursday afternoon over a frozen lake. It made a safe landing at the airport which was 15 minutes away and no one was injured. There were four crew members on board at the time and the patient at the scene was taken to Huntsville hospital. According to the story, the AW139 helicopter fleet has had a number of occurrences of in-flight loss of cockpit windows dating back to 2008. Modifications to the specifications of the window assembly had been made for the fleet as a result, but the helicopter involved in this week’s incident had the modified design that was meant to fix the problem. Current discussions are being held to find out more about what caused the incident.
