Property owner charged thousands for not having smoke alarms

The owner of a Gravenhurst housing unit will pay thousands of dollars in fines for not having smoke alarms. On December 16th, a Bracebridge court fined the property owner $7,500 plus a victim surcharge and court fees for not having smoke alarms in two rental units at a property on Farquhar Street. This ruling comes nearly a year after a complaint to the Gravenhurst Fire Department was launched. Robert King, Gravenhurst’s Fire Prevention Officer says the court reinforced the need to have working smoke alarms in order to protect lives.
