Canada Day BBQ brings in $45K for summer camp geared towards those living with vision loss

A Muskoka summer camp geared towards those living with vision loss is getting a funding boost. CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre, also known as Lake Joe, raised $45,000 with its Canada 150 barbecue. The money is going to go towards two programs to help keep the camp modern and its campers returning year after year.

General Manager Eugene Chong says one of the initiatives the money will go towards is the Buy a Bed program.

Chong says the Canada Day BBQ helped to complete the bed project, and now all of the cabins are updated. The other program the cash will go towards is Sponsor a Camper. Chong says that helps to make sure anyone who wants to go to the camp is able too.

Chong says Lake Joe has campers as young as toddlers and as old as seniors. He says the camp is an accessible, lake-front facility, which provides both fun activities and vision rehabilitation for those living with vision loss. He says it’s a supportive environment, that lets campers participate in outdoor activities they may not get to experience otherwise.

Chong says there is a need for this kind of camp in Muskoka, as it’s important to share experiences with others who know what living with vision loss is like.

More about Lake Joe is available on the CNIB website.
