Construction on HOV lanes on the 400 shouldn’t affect your weekend drive to Muskoka

New HOV lanes on the 400 could help you get to the cottage a lot faster.

The MTO is preparing to start construction on the major highway between Vaughan and King in the next few weeks.

Officials with the MTO say the six-lanes will be extended to eight with a new HOV lane on each side.

HOV or commuter lanes are meant for vehicles with more than one person to help cut down on traffic.

Construction is not expected to hold up traffic in the area as all six lanes will stay open, but you can expect to see some speed reductions while driving through.

MTO officials are reminding drivers that anyone caught speeding in a construction zone with workers on site will get hit with a double fine.

According to officials, between Canada Day long weekend and the Labour Day Long weekend, all construction will finish by mid-day Friday and start up again on Monday every weekend.

Any major work that would lead to lane closures will happen overnight when traffic is light.

The new HOV lanes are expected to be finished by 2020.
