No immediate flooding risk, but water levels are higher than normal

Although there is no immediate risk, flooding could still hit Muskoka. The local branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has a flood outlook in effect for the area, which gives early notice for the potential of flooding.

The MNRF says this week’s rain and snow melt means water levels are higher than normal for this time of year. If your home has been affected by high water levels before, the MNRF says it’s a good idea to take steps to protect your property. Make sure your sump pumps are working and secure items along the shore lines.

The MNRF names the North and South Muskoka Rivers, the Big East River, and the Moon River/Bala Beach as all having a risk of flooding, saying they will react quickly to the influx of water from this week’s rain.

The Ministry also notes banks and shorelines are slippery and unstable this time of year, so be extra careful when down by the water.
