Healthcare overhauling continuing in Muskoka

Plans to change the healthcare system in Muskoka are continuing. The Muskoka and Area Health System Transformation has been in the works since last summer, and a draft report on how the structure will look should be finished by the end of June.

MAHST Project Director, Cheryl Faber, says the Local Health Integration Network is investing $200,000 into that report. She says they’re moving from a hospital-centred system to a primary-care centred system, which means re-evaluating what urgent care needs to be, how health hubs can be used, and how mental health services are delivered.

Faber also notes the transformation council is getting plans ready to go out to the community for feedback, from things like online surveys and focus groups.

This is the first time a healthcare system is being overhauled in Ontario, and Faber says they’re taking pieces from successful systems from around the world.
