University of Waterloo cancelling lease agreement in Huntsville

The University of Waterloo is pulling out of a lease agreement with Huntsville a full year early. The school, which is located at the Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment, is cancelling its lease at the end of August. It was originally meant to expire in August of 2018.

Dean Jean Andrey says the distance between the centre in Huntsville and the Waterloo campus is too far for students, but the classes will continue to be offered in Waterloo.

Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison says the town will now look towards the future, and will try to bring in a long-term solution to keep the financial impact as low as possible for taxpayers. He says the original intent of the building was to focus on education and the environment, and the town will take that into consideration when looking for future tenants.

This won’t affect any of the community groups or businesses renting space at the Waterloo Summit Centre.

The University first moved into the building in 2011, and renewed its lease for three years in 2015.
