South Muskoka Memorial Hospital getting $2.5M upgrades

Getting broken bones fixed will be a bit easier in Muskoka. The South Muskoka Memorial Hospital is getting two new pieces of equipment to replace old x-ray machines. Around $2.5 million is going into bringing a digital fluoroscopy machine and a new digital X-ray machine to Bracebridge.

The new machines let doctors see the images from a variety of angles without having to move the patient around too much, while reducing exposure to radiation.

The fluoroscopy machine is described by MAHC as an “x-ray movie”, so that the technicians can see a certain body part as it moves. It can be used in many different procedures, like biopsies, cardiac catheterization, and arthrography.

There is an older model at HDMH in Huntsville now, but this one installed at SMMH is more advanced and up-to-date.

This is part of a $6.5 million campaign called Get Better to upgrade hospital equipment, install an online health record system, and expand video-conference so patients can get in touch with specialists easier.
