Search for missing snowmobiler in Gravenhurst is over

The OPP is ending its search for a missing snowmobiler in Gravenhurst. The sled reportedly went into open water on Saturday night, around 8:00pm, in the Severn River area.

The missing snowmobiler, and the sled itself, still have not been found. The OPP says it has no further information or evidence to go on, and so the search has ended.

The OPP, Emergency Response Team, and the Gravenhurst and Orillia Fire Departments were all involved in the search, but could only safely access part of the area.

Because of the isolated location, and unstable ice conditions, the Canadian Armed Forces Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was called in. The JRCC, which is based in Trenton, sent a search and rescue team to the area, which included a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter and personnel. The OPP also used a number of its own resources, including a search and recovery unit, aviation services, and the OPP SAVE team.

The water where the sled was seen going into the water, and surrounding land, have all been searched.

Anyone who may have seen the sled go through the ice, or might know who the sledder is, is asked to call the Bracebridge OPP at (888) 310-1122, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
