Muskoka woman takes initiative to help Fort McMurray evacuees

After fires broke out in Fort McMurray and devastated thousands of lives, one Muskoka woman quickly went into action.

Sara Wood says her sister Emily wasted no time jumping on Facebook and posting on some of the community buy and sell Muskoka groups looking for donations for the displaced Alberta residents.

Wood says the sudden response was quick and astounding.

Wood says Emily suddenly found herself needing a storage unit with all the donations coming in.

And the giving spirit continued when a local vehicle dealership reached out to Emily.

When all the donations were collected the sisters transported the donations down to Rob McFadden in Barrie who has loaded the donations in his own transport truck and took them to Alberta himself.

Wood says when Emily started this initiative she never would have believed it would get to this point.

She says she was just amazed at the community spirit to help another community so far away.

Both individuals and businesses from across Muskoka made various donations to the initiative.
