Rainbow Day at BMLSS works to raise awareness and acceptance for LGTBQ community

The Gay Straight Alliance at Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School is educating teachers, students and the rest of the community on acceptance and equality.

On Wednesday, students were asked to wear rainbow gear in support of the LGTBQ population at the school.

Students were also treated to a special performance from To Be Determined theatre group from Guelph University.

Actor Zazu says it’s about two guy friends who go on a camping trip together and during a bear attack one of them reveals a secret.

The acting crew has been travelling to various high schools in Ontario to put on the performance.

GSA leader and teacher at BMLSS Andrea Butler says the theatre group offers some information to teachers for continued discussions in the classrooms afterwards.

Butler says students in the GSA school group felt there was a need for an awareness event like this.

During the day students were provided with face paint and rainbow stickers on a table that displayed various LGTBQ terms and definitions.
