Gravenhurst Fire Department Reminds Residents about Smoke Detector Lifespan

The Gravenhurst Fire Department is reminding residents to make sure their smoke alarms are not worn out.

Officials say it is a requirement to have smoke alarms on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas and they need to be checked on a yearly basis.

The lifespan of an alarm may last up to ten years. They say sometimes the sensors can get dirty or dusty which would cause them to wear out earlier.

They say if you have been in a home for ten years or longer, the smoke alarms should be changed immediately.
