Proper smoke alarms save Port Severn home say fire officials

A Port Severn family was fortunate to not lose their home after a fire started in the basement Thursday evening.
The fire started when a family member put a basket of clothing on a stove and the burner was mistakenly nudged on.
The smoke alarm was tripped and the homeowner was able to get his family outside before attempting to keep the fire under control with a fire extinguisher.
Gravenhurst volunteer firefighters arrived shortly and were able to bring the fire under control.
The stove was badly damaged and there was some smoke damage as well, but the rest of the home was saved.
Fire officials are reminding the public of the benefits of having a working smoke alarm and fire extinguisher, suggesting this fire could have had a much worse outcome.
