Provincial policing costs force tax increase for 2016 in Muskoka

Residents across Muskoka are already looking at a fairly significant tax increase for 2016 due to rising costs in policing.
The District of Muskoka has received the annual billing statement from the OPP and an increase in cost of nearly $3 million is pushing a tax levy increase of 3.25 per cent for 2016.
Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith says this will have an impact on homeowners with other costs rising as well.
The district had received a credit of over $700,000 from OPP in 2014 which was planned to be split over the 2016 and 2017 policing costs.
However due to the spike in cost the district staff is recommending to use the entire credit to soften the blow on this bill.
The cost of the tax levy increase with using only a portion of the credit as originally planned would be about 4.3 per cent.
