OPP rescues canoeist from Whalley Lake

Police are reminding everyone of the dangers of being on the water at this time of year.

On Tuesday, Almaguin Highlands OPP, Parry Sound EMS, and Magnetawan Fire Department were called to Whalley Lake in Magnetawan after a canoeist capsized.

Officers say the man fell into the lake around 2:30pm and he was unable to get out of the cold water so police and firefighters borrowed a canoe from a local resident to rescue the man.

He was wearing a life jacket which police say kept him alive until help arrived and he was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The OPP would like to remind people that the ice has just recently come off the water and lakes and rivers are still very cold and people should stay off the water until temperatures warm up.
