Health Unit says prevention is key at mass gatherings

The Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit is planning for emergencies at mass gatherings like the 2015 Pan Am Games. According to the Health Unit Board, mass gatherings are complex events where elements like disease, food and water safety and weather emergencies need to be considered by public health authorities. Events like the G8 Summit held in Huntsville in 2010 and this year’s Pan Am games require health authorities to focus on prevention. The Health Unit’s mass gathering plans will be put into play this July when Pan Am Games’ events happen at the Hardwood Hills Mountain Bike Park and the Innisfil Shooting Park. The Health Unit is also preparing for an expanded Burl’s Creek event grounds, which could see crowds of up to 70,000.
